Community Observer Program
The Department appoints Community Observers across the Northern Territory. Observers receive assignments, file observations, and contribute to the permanent Archive of Territory Character.
Observer Responsibilities
Receive assignments issued by the Department. Assignments concern the ordinary rhythms of Territory life — the light, the heat, the markets, the curlews.
Complete observations in the field or at your desk, as the assignment requires. The Department does not demand heroics.
File your observations through the Observer Portal. All submissions are reviewed by the Division of Data Integrity. Karen reads everything.
Build your Service Record. The Department maintains a permanent record of every Observer's contributions to the Archive.
Class DESK DUTY
Assignments delivered to your device. Suitable for all conditions including extreme heat, the build-up, and days when outdoor observation is not advisable.
Class WEEKEND DEPLOYMENT
Field-based assignments for Observers available on weekends. Locations vary. Conditions apply.
Class COMMUNITY ASSIGNMENT
Assignments involving the broader Territory community. Louise coordinates all community assignments.
Observer appointments are open to Territorians and visitors with a genuine interest in the character of the Northern Territory. The Department does not means-test interest.
